Q & A related to Security systems like CCTV, Access Control, Security Alarm
Security Systems for Small Businesses
No matter how small your business might be, security should be high on your priority list. You might have only a few pieces of expensive equipment, but to an amateur criminal that may be a good enough reason to attempt a break-in.
Fortunately, you don't need an expensive or complicated security system to protect your company's assets -- but you do need security consultants to outline your business's special security requirements. That way, you're less likely to be dazzled by a salesperson into getting more than you actually need. Think about which of your company's assets are the most valuable and vulnerable to theft. Then outline the potential security threats -- how serious are they? And how much can you afford to spend to protect them?
Here are the first security technologies to consider:
While there are "do-it-yourself" security systems on the market, it's best to go with a professionally installed system. They may cost a little more, but the service and quality you'll get will make it worthwhile. And a simple sticker with the logo of your security company, when placed on your front door, makes a great security device in itself.
CCTV Camera Systems “Closed Circuit Television”
The latest technologies in this line are digital recording and transmission; which means that clear pictures of events will be stored in the hard disk; and transmitted to another computer on the internet, it also acts as a Deterrent: the sight of a surveillance camera can be an effective crime deterrent in itself. But in some situations -- like when you suspect inside-theft - you may want to monitor your business with a covert “Hidden” camera but you need to know that hidden cameras are banned from the UAE.
Access Control systems:
You need to protect your front entrance day and night; this is where an access control system comes to lock the door down for unauthorized persons and open up for card/code holders; and then optionally give you a full report of who entered or exited and when;
When you are looking for a Security Alarm System select the one with an integral alarm panel - one where the control circuits fit into a keypad. This kind of system is commonly used by small businesses, which often need only one alarm panel to secure the entire premises. With a keypad system, you can reprogram your pass code at any time or set a separate code for each employee (when the employee leaves the company, simply cancel the code). You can also use the keypad to manually activate an audible panic siren, a silent hold-up alarm, or a fire or medical alarm.
When your security alarm does go off, you'll want to make sure to get notified as soon as possible. A dialer can be hooked up to your telephone line that intelligently and silently alerts a list of people in sequence in case of a fire or attempted break-in at your business.
IP Camera (Internet Protocol Camera) is a type of digital cameras which can transmit data and control signals via Ethernet and Internet for Remote Surveillance. It’s also called a Network camera and sometimes mistaken with a webcam which is just a camera connected to a computer with very limited use, mainly for chats and video conferencing.
SuperNannyCam is a wireless IP camera which securely connects to the home’s wireless Router. It employs the very latest in tech; in fact up until its unavailing last year, it was almost impossible to have a home surveillance system without tearing down the walls. Some people refer to it as a web camera or Network camera in addition to IP camera. It is discrete but not a hidden camera (spy and hidden cameras are banned in the UAE by law), its white color helps it blend-in even more.
The built-in Web-server gives you a secure channel to monitor, Listen & record, unlike basic webcams, it does not need a computer always connected, thanks to its processing and transmission power.
Super Nanny Cam features: Wireless connection (Wi-Fi), Micro SD Slot, Secure Connection, Compatible with PC/MAC, Mobile Enabled, Email Alerts, Motion detection, Night Vision, None intrusive Design, etc.

The amount of time a Digital Video Recorder will record for is based on the size of the DVR's hard disk drive (HDD), the number of CCTV cameras recording and the number of frames per second it is recording at. One security camera recording in Real Time uses 1 GB per day. So a 16 CCTV camera system will use 16 GB in one day.
You can hook up as many security cameras as your LCD Monitor has inputs. Most TV Monitors have 2 inputs but when using a quad you can hook up to four CCTV cameras.
Maxcom CCTV can help protect your business, staff, customers or property. Footage from CCTV is admissible in court and can provide evidence in an insurance claim.
Maxcom CCTV camera systems monitor and record moving images. The images can be recorded onto a Digital Video Recorder and played back at a later date. Modern CCTV DVR systems have softwares that allow you to search through footage of a particular time and date.
MAXCOM supply and installs Day and Night Vision CCTV Cameras and InfraRed Security Cameras (IR CCTV Cameras) to enable night vision mode. Our CCTv IP cameras can capture in complete darkness and provide excellent video in the low light conditions. Depending on model Maxcom cameras offer direfent IR range starting from 20 m.
Maxcom has PTZ Camera options to offer its cleints but we don't recommend them for Home ,office or small retail installations for the following reasons:
- SuperIPcams / SuperNannyCams come with wide angle view to cover any room from any corner
SuperIPcams / SuperNannyCams provide High resolution video which gives great definition of all people and objects in the camera's view, in addition to digital zooming
IP cameras which come with PTZ options are at least 3 times more expensive and could potentially have mechanical failures, compared to fixed IP Cameras
In order to have adequate coverage from PTZ cameras, they require a security operator controlling the camera all the time (as in airports and malls)
If you leave the PTZ camera pointing at a certain direction, this means it's not pointing at all the other directions, leading to missed events in recording
Motion activated recording isn't possible on PTZ cameras as perfect as it could be on fixed cameras
Remote Monitoring is remote access to installed security cameras and other devices, creating a central management system for its clients to view and control their multiple locations simultaneously. Central Monitoring System (LAN & Internet) comes built in our systems as a standard, it allows authorized users to log in all their different locations and view all their security cameras on the same screen by simply dragging & dropping them. Live viewing Audio/Video Playback recorded Audio/Video Record to local disk.
Remote Monitoring is Maxcom’s main area of specialty.
Maxcom Digital Video Recorders allow remote access (live view) via mobile phones (WinCE / Symbian / iPhone / Blackberry).
Maxcom IP cameras can be remotely viewed from anywhere in the world in Blackberry, Android, iPhone, iPad, Nokia, PC / MAC.
MAXCOM was the First CCTV Brand that introduced the Remote Monitoring Systems. We can view live what ever is hapenning in your Home or office on your mobile or PC Using PSTN ,ISDN ,ADSL Line as well as our 3G CCTV DVRs are enabled to watch the locations using your handheld devices.
MAXCOM can supply the latest technologies and we have the stock of all existing technologies. We can supply the CCTV DVR’s standalone as well as PC Based and the compression technologies used are as MPEG, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, JPEG-2000, MJPEG, WAVELET and the latest one H.264 Technology - the most advanced video compression level available for a DVR system which provides clear picture, longer recording and dramatically saves on storage space.
CCD (Charged Coupled Device) is one of the main elements used in Surveillance CCTV cameras to produce high resolution images in low-light conditions. CCD is basically a small silicon chip that receives light and turns it into voltage variations which makes up an image. It's usually measured in inches with 1/3" CCD being the standard.
Some security cameras use CMOS (complimentary oxide semiconductor) which cost much less then CCD eventhough they work following saming principle "coverting light into electrons". However CCDs are more preffered for use in Security CCTV cameras as they produce a much higher quality images, generally have more pixels then CMOS and they have been manucfatured for a longer period of time.
Safe operational temperature for Black and White CCTV Security cameras is between -23°C to + 50°C or -10ºF to +122ºF
Safe operational temperature for Colour CCTV Security cameras is between -23º C to +40ºC or -10ºF to +104ºF
Safe Storage temperated for Security cameras between -30ºC to +70ºC or -22ºF to +158ºF
H.264 compression is one of the most advanced compression formats for recording, distribution of video images used for Security Digital Video Recorders.
It's also known as MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding) - a video compression standard that offers significantly greater compression than its predecessors. The standard offers up to twice the compression of the current MPEG-4 ASP (Advanced Simple Profile), in addition to improvements in perceptual quality. The H.264 standard can provide DVD-quality video at less than 1 Mbps, and is optional for full-motion video over wireless, satellite, and ADSL Internet connections.
All Maxcom DVRs use H.264 technology as it allows to deliver excellent compressed images, increases recording time, saves on Hard Disk Drive storage space which same time improves DVR remote monitoring features.
Intrusion (Burglar) or Security Alarm is a system designed to deter and detect criminals before and during burglary with police & owner notification. Security alarm can be accessed through the Telephone/GSM line or Network.
Maxcom Alarm panels come in wired and wireless flavors, those that connect and dial upon alarm via land lines or GSM SIM cards. Our Alarm Panels accept upto 6 wired zones and 10 wireless, and those with 50 wireless sensors. The Panels are equipped with wireless transmitters and repeaters. The alarm system is also programmed to connect to the Local Police Monitoring stations for very fast dispatch of Patrol officers in case of alarm.
When you need to choose between hard wired and wireless security alarm system installed in your home or office or retail you can't have a definite answer because each system has its own pros and cons. Wired system requires to have electric wiring, cables. Sometimes it is just necessary to have a hard-wired alarm to avoid any interference.
If you are a home owner with pre-installed wiring then you might save time and money if you go for a wired security alarm system. Cabled alarm requires professional installation.
Wireless Security Alarm systems are faster to install. It has a great advantage if you need to change locations and add more sensors to your current system. If you decided to relocate the system can be removed and installed at the new place. Wireless alarm system costs cheaper even with professional installation.
Any home and business owner must consider his / her budget and distance requirements before choosing the type of security alarm system.
Nowadays most of users opt for a wireless security alarm due to fast and cost-effective installation.
A Monitored Security Alarm system connects to a monitoring centre that is manned 24 hours a day 365 days a year, via your telephone line. If the alarm is triggered it will send a signal to the centre and the owner, a keyholder or the police can be informed.
If your phone line is cut a signal cannot be sent. However, for extra security a dual signalling method can be implemented .
Yes. You can install a security bell which only alarms a loud noise to deter intruders / burglars or alert your neighbours. Your burglar secfurity alarm can be configured to send voice messages to your mobile phone.
Yes, of course. Your security alarm can be configured for night setting. Which means at night, you are free to move around at certain areas of the house such as upstairs, leaving the ground floor covered by the alarm.
Access control is the ability to permit or deny the use of a particular resource by a particular entity. Access control mechanisms can be used in managing physical resources (such as a Office Entry, Hi-Tech Locations, movie theater, to which only ticketholders should be admitted), logical resources (a bank account, with a limited number of people authorized to make a withdrawal), or digital resources (for example, a private text document on a computer, which only certain users should be able to read).
Access control card readers for multiple doors are monitored by software, accessible through the Network with hundreds of protective and intuitive features as well as integration with other systems like CCTV and alarm systems,Fingerprint / Face ID detection and time attendance systems, Home automation and industrial alarm systems, allowing only authorized people to pass through doors & gates.
What is Time & Attendance? It’s the type of security system which allows you to collect and organize your employee time data simply and accurately. The system comes with Biometric, Proximity cards & tags.
Biometric is the science of measuring physical properties of living beings. The aim of the extraction of biometric features from a biometric sample is to remove any superfluous information which does not contribute to biometric recognition. This enables a fast comparison, an improved biometric performance, and may have privacy advantages.
RFID card readers (for door access and time attendance) serve a double purpose, while it lets people through doors; it also can register their ins and outs in the software for later revision and calculation.
Fingerprint terminals are considered to be the most pervasive and popular of all attendance terminals. Fingerprints are quite hard to fool, in fact Maxcom’s signature models have been used by the US Air Force for entry and attendance.
Face ID are the latest range of Biometric Terminals, it is also catching on quite rapidly due to the ease of use and the sheer genius of design, comprehensive Access & Attendance reports are also a strong plus.
Maxcom is continuously doing R&D in the field of access control and time attendance devices and came up with the system which will be fitted with world class standards like electrical power backup for the locks, readers and controllers to make sure the systems are in good standing at all times, balancing the fail-safe and the fail-secure methodologies well to maintain the best for the corporate & users, Biometric terminals, which are Fingerprint and / or Face identification, also control doors, although they are normally targeted towards the Time & Attendance Applications where users log-in using their fingers and then the Admin remotely collects all kinds of helpful reports to track attendance and calculate payroll.
One super-feature is the ability for management of remote access to devices by logging-in from any browser anywhere in the world and it can easily see who's in and out and generate quick reports which tell them how the attendance is going for their company.
Biometric is the science of measuring physical properties of living beings.
ISO/IEC: Biometrics is the automated recognition of individuals based on their behavioral and biological characteristics such as fingerprints, eye retinas & irises, voice and/or facial patterns, hand measurements, DNA. By measuring an individual's suitable behavioral and biological characteristics in a recognition inquiry and comparing these data with the biometric reference data which had been stored during a learning procedure, the identity of a specific user is determined.
Biometric features are information extracted from biometric samples which can be used for comparison with a biometric reference. Example: characteristic measures extracted from a face photograph such as eye distance or nose size etc. The aim of the extraction of biometric features from a biometric sample is to remove any superfluous information which does not contribute to biometric recognition. This enables a fast comparison, an improved biometric performance, and may have privacy advantages.

To be able to recognize a person by their biometric characteristics and the derived biometric features, first a learning phase must take place. The procedure is called enrolment and comprehends the creation of an enrolment data record of the biometric data subject (the person to be enrolled) and to store it in a biometric enrolment database. The enrolment data record comprises one or multiple biometric references and arbitray non-biometric data such as a name or a personnel number.Biometric sample Biometric features
This mode is used to avoid the flickering on your monitor because of the frequency differences between your system and light. Some countries use two different frequencies, and some countries use NTSC system but their voltage frequency is 50Hz. This function is enabled to not only prevent the flickering on your monitor, but also fix the shutter to decrease color rolling on your camera. However, since the amount of light passing through the lens is decreased, the sensitivity is also decreased accordingly.
Typically, one object reveals different colors under different light conditions. For example, white paper becomes yellow when yellow light is projected on that paper. However, when ATW is enabled, white paper is still white through the lens and will not be affected under different light conditions. Your security camera will tune the color difference automatically based on the specified white light.
Auto Gain Control (AGC) will adjust the sensitivity of CCD pick-up elements automatically based on the light condition. When the light condition is dark, the sensitivity goes up and you can get a brighter display. When the light condition is too bright, the sensitivity goes down and you can get a darker display. When the light condition is normal, the sensitivity is also normal. "AGC" option means
A "Manual Iris" lens is the lens with adjustable iris. Normally, it is used in the indoor environment where the light condition usually remains stable. You can adjust the F number to get the best image brightness. It is the most suitable solution for the indoor environment but you need to turn off AES function to avoid color rolling problem. An "Auto Iris" lens is the lens that automatically adjust
PPPoE stands for Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet. It is a non-standard method of connecting to your ISP to gain a dynamic IP address. It relies upon a software client that is provided by the ISP. A dynamic IP address is required to gain a connection to the Internet.
In the context of computer networking, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP, currently implemented as DHCPv6) is a client-server networking protocol. A DHCP server provides configuration parameters specific to the DHCP client host requesting, generally, information required by the client host to participate on an IP network. DHCP also provides a mechanism for all.
MAXCOM always supports clients in all forms .

You can not use any hidden camera in your premises (residential or commercial).
Hidden cameras (any spy equipment) are banned in the UAE by Law and selling it concidred as a criminal offence
A facial recognition system is a computer application for automatically identifying or verifying a person from a digital image or a video frame from a video source. One of the ways to do this is by comparing selected facial features from the image and a facial database. It is typically used in security systems and can be compared to other biometrics such as fingerprint or eye iris recognition systems
A Passive Infrared sensor (PIR sensor) is an electronic device that measures infrared (IR) light radiating from objects in its field of view. PIR sensors are often used in the construction of PIR-based motion detectors (see below). Apparent motion is detected when an infrared source with one temperature, such as a human, passes in front of an infrared source with another temperature, such as a wall. This is not to say that the sensor detects the heat from the object passing in front of it but that the object breaks the field which the sensor has determined as the "normal" state. Any object, even one exactly the same temperature as the surrounding objects will cause the PIR to activate if it moves in the field of the sensors.
Having a PIR sensor in a security IP camera is considered as an advanced feature. Maxcom has a range of IP CCTV cameras which come with this feature giving a user a lots of benefits by recording events, sending email, push noticiations, saving images to FTP folder triggered by movements.
One of these cameras is Robocam which has a built-in PIR sensor and pushs notifications to your iPhone, iPad, Andrpid, send alerts to your email and ftp folder. For more info visit https://maxcom.ae/robocam
A Microsoft open technology for Windows-based applications. ActiveX controls can be downloaded as part of a Web document to add functionality to the ActiveX- enabled browser, e.g. Internet Explorer.
AF (Auto Focus)
An ability by which the camera lens automatically adjusts its focus on the captured subject.
The area of view, measured in degrees. It is the view that a lens can cover in practical usage. A short focal length has a wide-angle.
The ratio of width to height of a screen or video picture. Most TVs and monitors have a 4x3 aspect ration-- the screens are 4 units wide and 3 units high.
A special type of iris, is used to adjust the amount of enter light, electrically controlled by the camera. There are two main types of AutoIRIS - Video and DC IRIS. See also Video IRIS and DC IRIS.
It is an electrical cable that consists two conductors, separated by an insulating layer. It is used to transmitting analog video in a CCTV system.
Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor, one type of image sensor found in digital cameras.CMOS chips are easier and cheaper to make than CCDs but don't match the picture quality generally.
Charged Coupled Device, an electronic detector made of silicon that converts light energy into electronic signals. It is used in many digital cameras for image detection.
Joint Photographic Experts Group; is an image compression format for images. Unlike other formats, it is a lossy compression technique.
Infrared radiation is a radiation of a wavelength longer than visible light, but shorter than microwave radiation. The color cameras can detect the infrared radiation by the heat and capture it.It will filter the infrared radiation by IR-cut filter and prevent the distortion.Under low illuminance or night, the cameras will remove the filter and allow infrared radiation to hit the image sensor and produce images.
Internet Protocol address; is a unique number that devices use to identify and communicate with each other on a network, which uses the Internet Protocol standard.
IP Waterproof Rating (IP66 - IP68)
The IP rating means that product is protected against the ingress of solid object and water. Many cameras or camera housings are designed for outdoor use, and therefore need to be waterproof. The first digital is the protection against solids, and the second digital is the protection against water. Refer to the above table for details; E.g.,
IP66 - Total protected against dust and strong jets from all directions.
IP68 - Total protected against dust and long periods of immersion under pressure.
IR Cut filter
Infrared-radiation cut filer, is a color filter used in color CCD or CMOS, in order to block the infrared light and make the colors more realistic.
A process that divides each video frame into two fields. The odd numbered lines to be field one and all the even numbered lines to be field two.
Interlaced video uses two video fields to make a single frame of video.
A group of standard wireless specifications developed by the IEEE. It defines a wireless interface between devices to manage packet traffic and supports speeds up to 2Mbps.
Kilobits per second, a unit of network connection speed. (1 kbps equals to 1,000 bits per second).
Light Emitting Diode, a semiconductor used to convert information from electrical to optical form, typically as an indicator light.
Pixel element is used to display the images captured from digital cameras. The Megapixel is generally equal to one million pixels.
Motion Picture Experts Group standard that specifies a variable rate compression algorithm that is used to compress full-motion image sequences at low data rates.
MPEG-4 Simple Profile
One kind of MPEG4 Profile, used to specify which method the MPEG4 decoder would support. It supports I-, PVOPs (frames),CIF resolution and 384 kbit/s. (at the L3 level). Refer to Wikipedia for details.
Motion JPEG, is a video codec consisting of a sequence of individual JPEG images. The image quality is independent from the motion of the image that differs from MPEG video.
MAC address (Media Access Control address)
Media Access Control address; is one unique code assigned to a networking device. For example, the network card in a computer has its own MAC address.
National Television Systems Committee; is the most popular video display standard in North America.NTSC uses 525 TV lines per frame and frame rate is 30 frames per second.
Optical zoom amplify the image size by adjusting the lens. It enlarges the subject without sacrificing resolution.
PAL (Phase Alternating Line)
Phase Alternating Line, is a video display standard used in Europe and certain other parts of the world.PAL uses 625 TV lines per frame and frame rate is 25 frames per second.
The ratio of the value of the signal to that of the noise (expressed in decibels). The higher the number, the better.
TVL (TV Lines)
TV Lines is used to define the resolutions in analog video. The higher TVL value, the sharper the image.
VPN (Virtual Private Network)
Virtual Private Network; is a private communications network often used within a company.
A protection for the camera from the adverse environmental conditions.
WDR [Wide Dynamic Range]
CCTV camera function to provide clear images even under back light circumstances where intensity of illumination can vary excessively, namely when there are both very bright and very dark areas simultaneously in the field of view of the camera. WDR enables the capture and display of both bright and dark areas in the same frame, in a way that there are details in both areas, i.e. bright areas are not saturated, and dark areas are not too dark. (Source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wide_dynamic_range)
W-LAN (Wireless LAN)
Wireless Local Area Network, a LAN that is connected via a wireless connection.
